Get the Kids to Love Reading

frequent trips to the bookstore would help

Loving to read begins early in life…even before birth. I’m sure you’ve read this from forwarded emails and inspirational stories around the websphere too. Remember that a fetus can hear when inside the womb…that’s why pregnant moms are encouraged to talk to them. It’s not so much the words, but with the tone it has been said and the meaning of the words could definitely be felt when we talk. Reading books to fetuses could have the same effect. I believe too that if it has become a routine, it won’t be difficult for you to read to your baby when she or he is out. My youngest son was conceived and born when I was studying the bible fervently, I have a friend who would come over and we read the bible together. He surely can hear her every time we study for when he was born, he would be silent, looked at my friend intently as if he remembers her voice so well. It has been like that until now, he’s 5-years-old.

Another effective way to get kids to love reading is to surround them with books. Picture books, story books, books about animals, encyclopedias or even DIY books are always a hit…for my kids that is. Reading to them before bedtime is not only something they’d appreciate, they would took it as  a habit later on in life.

Books need not be expensive, I could buy 10 books for 5€ at the book bazaar and they wouldn’t mind as long as they pick their own.

Bringing kids to the library is also a good experience…and they not only learn about different book genres, they learn to be respectful to other booklovers too by being silent while inside.

The most important way and perhaps you’ll hit 2 birds with one stone doing is to make kids love the bible. For I believe in what Paul said in his letter to Timothy in his First letter to him, in Chapter 3  “16 All Scripture is inspired of God and beneficial for teaching, for reproving, for setting things straight, for disciplining in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be fully competent, completely equipped for every good work.” Making kids love the bible is crucial to discipline them.

Come November 7-13 is the Buch Wien, an International reading and book fair held annually. We hope to come by and be lost in books.
